* Chess LectureChess Lecture

Time: 7:30 pm

Topic: The Life and Chess of Akiva Rubinstein
In his two volume biography, IM John Donaldson calls Akiva Rubinstein the “Uncrowned King”. Many chess historians have noted that Rubinstein may have been the strongest player in the world right before World War I, but he would never have a chance to challenge Lasker, Capablanca, or Alekhine for the title. In this two-hour lecture, Lucas Anderson will tell you about Rubinstein’s interesting life, from learning to play chess at 16 to disappearing from professional chess due to mental illness. FM Warren Harper will present some of Rubinstein’s notable games and tell you about a few (of the many) openings which bear his name.
The club opens at 6:30pm for casual play. Lecture is free for club members, ten dollars for visitors.
